Vietnam was settled by the Viets from central China. Controlled
by China from 111 BC to 939 AD and then became a state of
vassals. French domination began in 1858 and ended in 1884 with
the protectorates of Tonkin and Annam in the north and Cochin-
China in the south. In 1940 Japan occupied the country. Several
groups headed by Ho Chi Minh formed an independence league. In
August 1945, the Vietminh forced out Bao Dai, former emperor of
Annam and France, seeking to re-establish control, fought the
communist and nationalist forces from 1946 to 1954 and was
finally defeated at Dienbienphu on May 8, 1954. On July 1, 1949,
Bao Dai had declared an independent state with French approval
and China backed Ho Chi Minh. Conflicts broke out and a cease
fire was declared on July 21, 1954 that created North Vietnam and
South Vietnam. In 1954, hostilities began between the two
countries, with the Vietcong guerrillas trying to overthrow the
south. In 1964 the U.S. began air strikes against the north and
by April 1969 a total of 543,400 United States troops were
stationed in South Vietnam. On January 27, 1973, a cease fire
agreement was signed. It was never followed. By 1974, most U.S.
troops had been pulled out and by April 30, 1975 South Vietnam
had fallen. Over 165,000 refugees were accepted by the United
States. Over one million people in all were killed and 6.3
million were displaced. Heavy fighting continued with Cambodia
through 1977 to 1980 and in 1985 Vietnam troops fought Thai
troops along their boarder. Recent relations between China and
Vietnam have been poor. @
